In the early hours of last Wednesday (10th November 2021), a ransomware attack infected all IT systems of the main factory of Estrella Damm, in Barcelona.
Though it is not confirmed, there are numerous indicators that is has been a ransomware attack, since they are on the daily menu nowadays.
The attackers managed to interrupt the operation of all the machines of the factory, stopping its production. However, distribution and delivery services are still ongoing —they had remaining stock— and, thus, cybercriminals could not stop their commercial activity.
A business of this size often hires cybersecurity services that provide shields and barriers against cybercriminals and, yet, ransomware attacks make headlines globally and in a daily basis.
Wave of cyberattacks
Last year, all circumstances imposed by the pandemic scenario (teleworking, on-cloud platforms, etc.) paved the way for cybercriminals. In Spain, cyberattacks have increased by 125%; and in the UK and Ireland, the education sector alone experienced a 142% increase in weekly cyberattacks.
Even MediaMarkt, the leading technology company, suffered a cyberattack that collapsed all servers in some of their stores in Holland, Belgium, and Germany.
Other victims of cyberattacks were the European insurance company AXA, the National Basketball Association (NBA), JBS Foods, computer manufacturer ACER, the CNA, some government institutions, Universities, healthcare entities and lots and lots of SMEs…
Cybercriminals use phishing campaigns to make the users trust them and gain access to the servers through them. For instance, they’ll send infected e-mails that take control of the device or will use fake links where the user might enter their access credentials and, thus, give them to the attacker.
These incidents are proof that it can happen to the best of us. No matter the size of your company.
What is a Ransomware Attack?
A ransomware attack is an attack in which the cybercriminals encrypt and kidnap your data for ransom.
The best way to prevent this kind of cyberattack is hiring a resistant shield that analyses the security of your company and guarantees backups, protection against ransomware and malware, intrusion detection and prevention, monitoring, etc. This, among other services, is what we can offer from Cibinar.
Cybercriminals do bother fighting against all these shields and barriers, how could they not attack those companies that have no barriers at all?
Luckily enough, cybersecurity services allow companies to get back on track in a short time and minimize the consequences of such kind of attack, which, otherwise, would be brutal (legal consequences, reputational damage, loss of clients, leaks of confidential data, etc.).
All those factors make cybersecurity a real necessity.
